Having spent a year mostly lockdown in our homes, many of us have forgone our usual routines, opting for comfort instead. But, of course, with everything closed and no places to go, this meant turning to the internet for much of our inspiration and entertainment. And though the pandemic has brought a lot of everyday life to a halt, it appears to have boosted many people’s imagination and creativity when it comes to fashion and styling.
It seems that the quarantine has brought back a bit of nostalgia for the 1990s and early 2000s. This is probably mainly because many streaming services are now streaming our favorite sitcoms from that era. The nostalgia for the ’90s to 00’s aesthetic has also seeped into how we are styling ourselves.
One classic 90’s look that has made its way back into popularity during the quarantine is grunge. To achieve this look, a simple brown or burgundy lipstick will do. If you want to keep the focus on the lips, opt for minimal makeup around the eyes. If you want an all-out dramatic look, don’t be afraid to go bold with your lashes and eyeliner and add a light gloss to your dark lip.
Braids and Baby Hairs
Braiding hair is an essential part of keeping the hair neat, clean, and healthy for black women. Afro-textured hair tends to be drier and kinkier than other hair types and should not be manipulated every day, so braids are a great way to style afro-textured hair using a style that will last a long time. Larger box braids have come back into popularity, as they are easier to do than their smaller cousins. Bantu knots and cornrows have also made a comeback in recent months. If you a braiding novice, try sectioning your hair in larger parts and using plastic rubber bands to keep your sections neat—the hair. Once you are done styling your hair, don’t forget to use a bit of edge control to lay down your baby hairs for your completed look. You can also add some jewelry to give your braids some flare.
The quarantine has also brought about a lot of experimentation with makeup and accessories. We all have much more time to ourselves than before the quarantine, which means we have a lot of time to try new things we otherwise might not have. Using unconventional colors for makeup and nails has also grown in popularity over the past twelve months. People are using social media apps like Tik Tok to show off their bold new looks, creating virtual fashion shows from the comfort of their bedrooms. Trying something new with one’s makeup or nails can also be a source of calming and joy and help to break up the monotony of the day. If you have always wanted to try out a new look but were afraid to, now is the perfect time to try these new styles.
Now is the perfect time to wear on that new makeup you bought but never tried. Don’t be afraid to experiment with color.
You can also add some color to your hair. To avoid damaging the hair, you can opt to use colored hair wax, which can be easily washed out when you are done.
